SITUATION


Halvergate village was built on a promontory rising above the marshland and water meadows of the basin between the rivers Yare and Bure, and was once a seaport on a virtual island, before the sea receded and left the estuary to be drained. Extensive views can now be gained across the marshes to Great Yarmouth and coast beyond. These wetlands are a protected site of special scientific interest. The famed Halvergate marshes are home to teaming wildlife and especially birds, and are almost littered with historic windmills. This is the scene often painted as quintessentially Broadland, with early morning mists and never ending skyscapes, and which is delightful to explore on foot. The Weavers Way long distance path runs through the village which supports an active local community, with a village hall, public playing-field, churches, a well known cricket club at the public playing field and the Red Lion pub.

Apart from the pub and the medieval church, the local village amenities are available in Freethorpe about two miles away, with small-town facilities including a railway station in Acle, some four miles away. Great Yarmouth with its seaside amusements and shopping is about seven miles to the east, and the alluring north Norfolk coast is easily reached by car.

DESCRIPTION
